Ode to a cat by Jack Cole

Silent yet somehow
Filling the room
Vowing revenge
For sweeping a broom
Eternally brooding but suddenly wise
Stodgy and cranky but full of surprise
For when I am low, head down in my hands
I’ll feel a soft stroke in my lap you will land
As somehow you know where to stand on the scale
Balancing king, kitten, and friend on your tail
